What is an Ostomy?

An ostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the abdomen called a stoma, allowing waste to exit the body when part of the digestive or urinary system cannot function normally.

During surgery, a portion of the intestine or urinary tract is redirected through the abdominal wall. Waste then leaves the body through the stoma and is collected in a medical pouch called an ostomy bag.

How do pH strips work?

pH test strips contain special chemical dyes that change color when exposed to liquids with different acidity levels. When fluid contacts the strip, the color change reveals the liquid’s pH level, which can indicate the presence of digestive fluids or urine. OstoWatch analyzes these color changes to help detect leaks early.

Peristomal Skin Health

The skin surrounding the stoma is called peristomal skin. Because waste leaving the stoma contains digestive enzymes, it can lead to skin irritation. Maintaining healthy peristomal skin is critical to preventing pain, infection, and difficulty attaching ostomy appliances. Detecting these substances early helps prevent sking damage and infection.

Types of Ostomies

Not all ostomies are the same. The most common types include colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies, which divert waste from different parts of the digestive or urinary system. Each type produces different waste compositions, which can affect skin health, leakage risk, and ostomy care needs. Our system is adapted to handle all three types.
